It is difficult to teach the concepts of CIM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) and to explain how the various departments of a factory (Accounting, Billing, Acquisition of Raw Materials, Planning of Production, Actual Production) work together and influence one another. To overcome some of these difficulties the European Project Virtual Factory will provide a complete simulation of a complete enterprise. Each function of the enterprise is simulated on a separate computer. Students play different roles in this ‘enterprise’, giving them hands-on experience with these functions and at the same time allowing them to get the complete picture of the enterprise’s processes.
11 partners (both from academia and industry) from 5 countries take part in this European project. The project will be finished by end of 1999.
